To address this, seamoss harvesters, in collaboration with the St. Lucia National Conservation Fund and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, have developed a mariculture method for open-ocean harvesting. This method requires no fertilization, chemicals, or nets and prevents harm to the fragile marine ecosystem.
By using simple sticks to suspend single lines of twine with attached seamoss spores, they cultivate and harvest seamoss while minimizing environmental impact and preserving the integrity of the delicate ecosystem.
Job creation for local communities:
Seamoss harvesting has generated new employment opportunities and instilled hope for a brighter future in local communities that were severely affected by the decline of the banana export industry. Previously, bananas served as the primary source of income for local farmers' associations in St. Lucia until the loss of preferential trade agreements with the EU. This economic setback significantly impacted St. Lucia, especially its rural communities.
Many of these rural communities have been able to rebuilt their economies through seamoss harvesting.
